Accessibility

Slides, Posters, and more

  • Post materials online in advance and link to them with a QR code (this allows people to download and view them on their own devices) - for an example of a. free QR code generator click here
  • Use high contrast color schemes (e.g., white writing on a black background is easy for most visually impaired individuals to read)
  • Include closed captioning on presented videos

Giving a Talk

  • Use a microphone
  • Describe relevant parts of graphics, videos, and other visuals
  • Repeat questions posed by the audience (especially if there is no microphone for the audience)
  • Describe events in the room (e.g.,"About half of the audience raised their hand...")
  • Use gender-fair language (e.g., avoid gender-specific terms such as policeman or businessman when all genders are meant and use gender-neutral terms such as police officer or business person instead)
  • Keep diversity of your audience in mind (e.g., different diets or holidays depending on health, religion, or culture)
